Does your child have teeth that are crooked or misaligned? Are they making it difficult for your child to bite properly?
It could mean it’s time to do something about it before it becomes painful or too embarrassing. It’s often easy for kids to feel sensitive about how they look and crooked teeth and wearing braces may even make them a target for teasing.
Luckily, there are now many types of braces for children that aren’t nearly as fearsome looking as when you were a kid. Child orthodontics has come a long way since those days.
Braces are currently still the main method used to straighten teeth and correct misaligned bites. Typically, braces for children’s teeth work by the application of pressure to the jaws and teeth so they can be manipulated to move into the most preferable position.
This flexibility of materials also allows for different colours too, so that braces can appear tooth like in appearance. If necessary, wires can be constructed of materials that are titanium based as they are far more durable than stainless steel and don’t need to be adjusted quite so often.
We can also provide clear, invisible braces which can straighten teeth without requiring wire based traditional braces. These are non metal braces which can be used in child orthodontics when the child’s teeth are crooked, but not too badly. This technique uses clear, custom-made, removable trays that apply pressure to the teeth, moving them slowly but surely into their right position.
Apart from the use of teen braces, if the teeth are very crooked it may be necessary to apply more force through the use of rubber bands or elastics.
They come in a variety of colours and children often find them attractive to wear. They are used when more force is needed to move the teeth and jaws into the desired position.
Using braces to do most of the work to straighten teeth is common practice but sometimes it is necessary to use a retainer to prevent the teeth from moving back into their original position. Some retainers we use in You First Dental are removable while others are bonded behind the teeth.
