White fillings are a natural-looking option when a hole has to be filled
Do you have cavities to be filled next time you visit the dentist and are wondering which type of filling to use? There are many different teeth restoration techniques available.
One of the more attractive ones is the substitution of amalgam fillings for white dental fillings. These composite dental fillings are made up of a tooth coloured mixture of plastic and glass and they can be used to restore decayed teeth or for amalgam filling replacement.

The benefits of white fillings
The aesthetic properties of white fillings are the main advantages, particularly as the fillings can be blended with different shades to form a colour almost identical to the tooth that is filled.
Composites also bond well to the damaged tooth, so that the tooth structure remaining gets sufficient support, preventing it from breaking and insulating the tooth if exposed to hot food and drink. Composites do work well for small cavities, but tend to wear down more quickly than amalgam fillings.
One of the essential features of any filling is strength, as it is of no use to the recipient to have decay removed and a filling put in its place that crumbles when biting and chewing takes place.
For a long time, metal fillings were used as they were strong and durable and could last for several decades. More recently, white fillings are now also used commonly, in addition to amalgam fillings, especially for filling in small cavities. They are also strong and durable and can last many years.
How are white fillings put into place?
After preparing the area at You First Dental, we put the composite into the cavity in layers. A light is used to harden each of the layers in turn.
Once the process has been completed, we will use a number of tools to shape the composite so that it neatly fits the tooth. We will then polish it to help to stop staining and make it more resistant to wear and tear.
You may encounter some teeth sensitivity after a white filling has been fitted and the shade can alter somewhat if you are an avid tea or coffee drinker. At You First Dental, here in Airdrie, we can place a plastic clear coating on top of the white filling which helps to stop the colour changing if your concern is tooth colour.
